In 1987, Toppi was asked to draw a series of tarot cards. He was not very enthusiastic about it at the beginning, but he finally gave it a try and made 56 illustrations with a common theme: prehistoric mankind. That was actually the first time that Toppi drew a long series on the same theme. Those paintings are at the same time powerful and original and show the interest of the Milanese artist for cavemen, always with a touch of magic and mystery.
