The contexte

This illustration shows the production imageboard, used during pre-production to direct the artwork of the film Metropolis, beautifully written by Katsuhiro Otomo and directed by Rintarō. The poster represents the "Zone -1", the first underground level, a space for robots only.

The artist - Shuichi Kusamori

Shuichi Kusamori is a Japanese art director and background illustrator, and was the background artist for Ghost in the Shell. He was also artistic director on the second instalment, Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence in 2004, and other well-known Japanese anime licences such as Metropolis and the Psycho-Pass series.

Metropolis - The story

Humans and robots coexist in the multi-layered city of Metropolis, living together but in separated spaces. The story follows detective Shunsaku Ban and his nephew Kenichi who, having traveled from Japan, must solve the mystery behind the death of Dr. Laughton, a man suspected of organ trafficking and secretly working for the wealthiest man of the city, Duke Red.

The poster

This print is published by Galerie Riekeles, in collaboration with the author. It is a high-quality reproduction, as faithful as possible to the original work, accurately rendering down to the smallest detail the breathtaking landscapes and backgrounds that made the anime from which they are taken international successes.
