The context:

This background was used to create a pan down of the animation camera. It is the first view of the backalley behind Haruki’s Bar right at the beginning of the feature. Kaneda, Tetsuo and Yamagata start their adventure from this dark spot in Neo Tokyo.

Toshiharu Mizutani is the artistic director of the animated film AKIRA, and a hugely successful artist in his own right, having created some of the most iconic paintings depicting the film's many landscapes and backgrounds. He has also worked on more than forty films and anime, either as background artist or art director, including the not-to-be-missed Yuri!!! on Ice and Bleach.

AKIRA - The story

AKIRA is a science fiction manga created by Katsuhiro Ôtomo between 1982 and 1990. It tells the story of the adventures of two childhood friends turned enemies drawn into the megalopolis of Neo-Tokyo as they fight for survival. A dramatic story including superpowers, political intrigue, and revolution.

The manga was made into an animated film in 1988 providing the scene for this poster, and proved to be a huge success, and not just in Japan, taking the anime beyond the Japanese borders, contributing to its worldwide popularity.
