He had a unique illustration style based upon his early recreation of wood engraving illustrations with pen and ink. His skill as a draftsman and style made him a popular magazine illustrator in the early 20th-century, illustrating for scribner's, Harper's, McClures, Good Housekeeping, Ladies Home Journal and Colliers. With calculated placement and spacing of pen lines, Booth’s drawings encompass ranges of tonal value and density. Even in his late career, Booth’s imagination remained seemingly ingrained with the dreamlike scenery of rural Indiana, which he said captivated him with its “indescribable haze, its luminous silence, its spiritual suggestiveness.”
Booth cofounded the Phoenix Art Institute in New York and taught there between 1925 and 1946. IFranklin, noted for his exceptional line-drawing style and idealistic vision of art as “truth and beauty,” was inducted into the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame in 1983.

Cosmopolitan, born in Brussels in 1959, of French-Swiss nationality, I am a biologist by training and self-taught in drawing and comics. I started as a freelance cartoonist during my biology studies. In the early 1980s, the discovery of the great masters of comics and the meeting of the new generation led me to try my luck in this field while leading a scientific career in parallel. This career, and the associated travels, took over and occupied me until the 2010's, period during which the birth of my children led me to settle down. In 2018, my daughter Swann, left a book lying around whose title caught my eye: "The Story of a Seagull and the Cat Who Taught Her to Fly". I read it in less than an hour and the magic happened. I "saw" this book in comics. Not knowing the author, Luis Sepulveda, nor his reputation, I said to myself that it was the occasion to start drawing again. Some research on the internet allowed me to contact Luis who, after seeing some sketches, accepted that I adapt his book. The unfailing help and support of Anne-Marie Métailié, the advice of Louis-Antoine Dujardin and the welcome of Jean-Christophe Caurette did the rest...

For that same magazine, Derib and Job also created the little Indian 'Yakari', Derib's first hit series. From 1978, 'Yakari' appeared in Tintin. Derib had joined that magazine in 1970, when he began making western comics written by Michel Greg, such as 'Go West'. Derib subsequently created the famous 'Buddy Longway' series on his own in 1972, which he continued until 1987, and then restarted in 2002. 'Buddy Longway' was unique when it first appeared. Derib let his hero age, and have emotions, doubts and flaws, which was unusual at the time in European comics.
In addition to Tintin, Derib collaborated on Achille Tallon magazine, where he drew 'Les Ahlalàààs' (text by Greg). In 1981 appeared 'Celui-qui-est-né-deux-fois' ('He who was born twice'), a western that can be considered Derib's masterpiece.
In the 1980s, Derib began making more substantial and socially-motivated comics. In 1981, he created 'Jo', the first comic book on AIDS ever published.
Best known for his humanistic comics and his several western projects, Derib stands as one of the major artists of European comics.

Nikolay Georgiev is a digital and traditional artist, born and raised in the southern town of Plovdiv, Bulgaria. From a young age, he clearly presented a strong interest in imaginative art, fantastical worlds, comics, animation and pop culture. He would draw on walls, and blame it on ghosts when caught, watch TMNT and Transformers cartoons on TV, read superhero comics and play with action figures, all of which left a strong impression during childhood.
Concept art, games, and the artistic community surrounding those proved to be an amazing source of inspiration and motivation, leading to a deep dive into digital painting, concept design, and illustration. Later on, these same artistic communities and fields of art rekindled Nikolay’s passion for traditional drawing and sketching. This led to purposeful illustrating, and combined with the passion for sci-fi and robots gave birth to Fuelstains.
Meeting with the SuperAni team in 2018, and watching Kim Jung Gi draw served as a huge boost of motivation and inspiration to Nikolay. That event, and joining SuperAni in 2019 are easily marked as the two events leading to the conception of this book.

Redmer Hoekstra (1982) graduated from the Art Academy in Zwolle as a visual artist and illustrator in 2009. “I’ve always loved alienation and fantasizing, daydreaming. As a child I had all kinds of theories about how the world worked. At the Academy I was able to rediscover this and process this in to my work. How things work is a fascination of mine and in many drawings you can find this. I open up appliances and objects and freely change what is inside. Often a subject gets a completely different feeling or meaning. I play with form, meaning and function, while new combinations arise. Often surprising, strange and funny but also with a strange kind of logic, a fantastic and surreal world."

McCurry, NYC, 9/11, is the first published biography of the world famous photographer and journalist Steve McCURRY – his work includes the now iconic National Geographic cover of the Afghan Girl with the captivating green eyes – as he witnessed the unforgettable scenes of 9/11 unfold before him.
He has also worked with several video game companies and collaborated on various comics in the USA (Flash, Civil War II …) or Europe (Kiliwatch, Caurette Editions) as cover artist.

Abigail works primarily with pencil, ink, watercolor, and Photoshop, creating unique mixed-media illustrations. She enjoys the strange and archaic, so when she’s not drawing, she can likely be found watching re-runs of Dark Shadows, traveling, researching bizarre myths and legends, or spending time with her favorite long-leggedy beasts, ghouls, ghosts, and other things that go bump in the night.
Her greatest inspirations are fairytales, folklore, and ghost stories. The works of Edgar Allan Poe, H.P. Lovecraft, the Brothers Grimm, Shirley Jackson, Angela Carter, and many classic gothic works of fiction, such as Dracula and Frankenstein have always stirred her imagination.
Her greatest artistic influences are artists such as Arthur Rackham, Ida Rentoul Outhwaite, Maurice Sendak, Edward Gorey, Edmund Dulac, Kay Nielsen, Harry Clarke, Dorothy Lathrop, John Bauer, Jennie Harbour, Aubrey Beardsley, Yoshitaka Amano, Marjorie Miller, Alphonse Mucha, Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt, and John William Waterhouse, as well as animators or directors: Don Bluth, Hayao Miyazaki, Sylvain Chomet, Tim Burton, Henry Selick, and Guillermo Del Toro.
Abigail’s work has been shown extensively throughout America, from NYC to Los Angeles, as well as galleries in London, Paris, and Madrid. Her illustrations have been featured in various publications including ImagineFX, Clip Studio, Spectrum Fantastic Art, Art Fundamentals, The Graphic Canon of Children’s Literature, Rue Morgue, and Digital Artist. She’s worked with DC/Vertigo, DC kids, Universal, Dark Horse, Image, IDW, Titan Comics, Pelican Books, SYFY, and Sideshow Collectibles.

"I have always had a love for sketches. I’d be lying if I said some of that didn’t stem from impatience, but it’s also the freshness of the marks and the artist’s hand that is so evident in the choices. What to show, what to hide and what to imply just enough to let the viewer’s imagination find its own path. That’s what has always fascinated me. Even with artists whose finished work I love, I make an effort to seek out their sketches and doodles. Insights into how they solve problems and build worlds. [...] And so I hope you enjoy the little journeys and the epic adventures penciled and inked and painted within this collection. And I hope they might inspire you to seek adventures of your own."

Born in Strasbourg in 1921, Jacques MARTIN discovered comic strips at a very early age through the albums of Buster Brown. It was on the back of these pages that he made his first drawings, most of which depicted aeroplanes (his father was an aviator). This passion for drawing gave rise to an immoderate taste for history. After the war and until 1948, he alternated series with Lamar, l'homme invisible, Œil de Perdrix, Le secret du Calumet, Le Hibou gris, La Cité fantastique... While continuing his contributions to Bravo and Story, Jacques Martin introduced the character of Alix, Alix l'intrépide, in the Journal de Tintin, to appear in the 7 to 77 year-olds' magazine from September 16, 1948.
In 1952, he abandoned Alix in favour of a contemporary story featuring a reporter, Lefranc, in La Grande menace. In 1953, Hergé asked him to work in his studios. Jacques Martin's involvement lasted nineteen years, during which he worked on several Tintin stories, without abandoning Alix and Lefranc. Over the following decades, he created new series: Jhen, Arno, Orion, Kéos and Loïs.
Having built up a team of young illustrators around him, Jacques Martin was keen to get them to continue the series he had created. So there were plenty of projects to come until 21 January 2010, the day on which the author died in Switzerland.

Back in 2005, I discovered that there were thousands of named angels throughout multiple mythologies. I've been hooked ever since and Angelarium has been a part of my life every single day. Even when I'm not paying attention to it, it's gone out on the internet and had a life of its own. The name of the project has come to define the idea of surreal angelic figures and the fan base around it has inspired me to continue to create new designs for it.

British-born, Kyiv-based artist Mark Neville makes work at the intersection of art and documentary. He creates films, photographs, and books that he often disseminates for free to a target audience to have an impact on social issues.
In 2020, he sent out 750 complimentary copies of his last book Stop Tanks With Books before the full-blown invasion began, to a target audience of diplomats, politicians, the super-rich, celebrities, and NATO and EU members – as a call to action. The concept was to weaponise the medium of the photo book with two main aims. The first was to garner international support for Ukraine in its continuing fight for independence, help end Russian aggression in Donbas, and call for the withdrawal of Russia from Crimea. Second was to counteract the wealth of fake news and racist disinformation the Kremlin was generating – material that Western media was often perpetuating and reproducing unchallenged and unchecked – by presenting real portraits of Ukrainians.
Neville’s work can be found in many museum and private collections, and he has exhibited extensively in venues including: The Victoria & Albert Museum (UK), Tate Britain (UK), The Andy Warhol Museum (USA), The Photographers’ Gallery (UK), The Imperial War Museum (UK), Haus Der Kunst (Germany) and Musée du Jeu de Paume (France).
Neville was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize (2013), the Aperture Photo Book Award (2017), the Time Magazine Photo Book Award (2017), and The Deutsche Borse Photography Foundation Prize (2020). Stop Tanks With Books was nominated for both the Arles Photo Book Award and the Paris Photo Book Award in 2022.
Neville has lived in Kyiv since 2020, where he co-founded and now runs the hybrid humanitarian aid and photography project Postcode Ukraine.

Patrice Pellerin is a French illustrator and comic artist, known for the highly detailed and well-documented artwork of his historical comic L'Épervier (1994). He was also one of the artists of Jean-Michel Charlier's classic pirate comic Barbe-Rouge.
Pellerin, the son of a French governor, was born in 1955 in Brest, in Brittany. Because of his father's work, young Patrice spent his childhood in over twenty different towns. He eventually settled in the Britton commune Landivisiau, a town that gave him the setting for his future comics. After studying Classical Languages, he graduated in comics and animation from the School of Applied Arts in Reims in 1974. He began his career under the guidance of Pierre Joubert, and even spent several years in this well-known French illustrator's house in Meudon.
Pellerin initially made illustrations for educational and historical books. These included a series of books about French regions for Ouest-France, novels in the collection 'Signe de Piste' and historical books for Hachette and Ouest-France. It was Jean Giraud (Moebius) who introduced him to veteran comic writer Jean-Michel Charlier, which launched his career as a comic artist. Charlier asked him to take over the pirate comic Barbe-Rouge, that he had created with Victor Hubinon in the late 1950s. Pellerin gave the comic a more modern and realistic look. He worked with Charlier on a cycle about a slave rebellion, while Charlier picked Christian Gaty to continue the more classically oriented storyline he had started with Jijé, who had passed away in 1980.
With the historical saga L'Épervier, his masterpiece, Pellerin established himself as a skillful author of historical and naval comics. His wide knowledge of naval history and highly detailed drawings result in historically correct reconstructions of the Britton region of the 18th century. For the representation of ships, he mainly uses the writings of naval historian Jean Boudriot as documentation. Besides Pierre Joubert and Jean Giraud, Pellerin ranks among his influences American artists like Frank Frazetta, Alex Raymond and Hal Foster, and storytellers like Charlier and French novelist Michel Zévaco. In addition to his comics work, Pellerin does illustrations for museums, historians and archaeologists.

It has been thirty years since I first discovered the world of comics at the age of seven. Drawing has always been my passion, I watched countless movies, animated or not, and played numerous video games, but through it all, I always found solace and joy in drawing.
I never thought I could become a part of the comic industry, but March 2001, I landed my first job as a game artist. At that time, I felt very lucky to find a job that matched my major, since many classmates of mine went on to work for architectural design firms or advertising agencies.
Therefore, I cherished this extraordinary opportunity. While advancing my career as a game artist , I was continuing on my drawing journey. I started my career as a 3D character artist, since back then 3D-related fields had better employment opportunities than for drawing and illustrating. However, my passion for drawing was much stronger than for creating 3D art. Then, in 2007, a unique opportunity allowed me to switch my career to that of 2D concept artist. Since then, I never again used 3D software or used photos as references.
All the works presented in this collection were drawn using digital pens and Photoshop software, but none of them were created using 3D software or by referencing photo materials. I believe no drawing methods are superior or inferior to any other, I simply chose the drawing style that I prefer. I have always appreciated the effect produced by hand drawing, nevertheless the design ideas of 3D art inspired me to make the light sources in my work more realistic. And I still use basic adjustment tools in Photoshop, such as selection and free transform.
2023 marks my 22nd year in the industry, and this art collection is a testament to my dedication and illustrating journey over the past 22 years, and in Black Dragon Crown I share a collection of illustrations from a series of stories that I created during my free time.

Today, I'm a freelancer, alternating between design missions for video games and manga-style pin-up illustrations, which I distribute on my Patreon platform and on my social networks. In 2023, I realized my dream of self-publishing my artbook. For the egotistical pleasure of placing it among the hundreds of artbooks that have inspired me, but above all, to share with you my work on a beautiful medium in this digital age.
A large part of my book is devoted to my pin-ups. Sometimes, they simply show off their curves, but more often than not, I've tried to create a little universe for them, in which they could be the heroine. Inspired by Heroic-fantasy, science fiction, video games and even little slices of life, I have tried to vary the themes while making sure they are both sexy and independent. This is followed by some of the character-design and illustration work I did for Ankama, and for the independent game "Young Souls". The book closes with a few pages of preparatory sketches and other drawings done just for fun. Enjoy!
