Bridge of Khazad-Dûm

If you have read the book or seen the film, The Lord of the Rings, you will remember the memorable passage where the Fellowship of the Ring crosses the bridge of Khazad-dûm, the last obstacle before leaving Moria. This is the moment when Gandalf confronts the Balrog before (spoiler alert!) disappearing into the bowels of the earth and being reborn as Gandalf-the-White (phew!).

This is the passage that Donato Giancola depicts, creating a magnificent canvas that we are delighted to offer you today as a high-quality reproduction. Since the original was a little large (170 x 200 cm... watch the video below!), this fine art print has been adapted to a more reasonable size of 71 x 61 cm, better suited to modern homes and hobbit holes.

Donato oversaw the entire printing process to ensure the most faithful reproduction possible of his original oil painting, capturing the brilliance of the light and the subtlety of the shadows, as well as the scores of details adorning this illustration. These features are complemented by a beautiful Art Deco border, stamped and embossed in gold, naturally of course, after all this is a dwarf's world!

This print is signed by the artist and numbered – ‘identified’ would be a more appropriate term - using a system of twelve runes, five of which will be chosen randomly for each print run. Bridge of Khazad-dûm was successfully funded through crowdfunding on Kickstarter, where you can see more details about the complete project.

About the Artist

Donato Giancola is an American artist specializing in narrative realism with science fiction and fantasy content, including images for Tolkien's Middle-earth. He has won many Chesley Awards and other honors for his illustrations
