It's a little book that makes me happy. A collection of drawings from my notebooks. These images come to me unexpectedly in the early hours of the morning, emerging through a ritual that has accompanied me for over fifteen years: starting my day with twenty minutes of free, improvised drawing. Some motifs come back and repeat themselves, sometimes over weeks, while others only last for a page or two. Whatever.
In all the years I've been doing this, I've had to choose from thousands of drawings. The fragments that make up this little book were pecked out of some twenty notebooks scattered between 2012 and 2022.
The genesis of the notebooks:
Improvvisamente, a little notebook made up of many notebooks, is ALFRED's exercise ground. Every morning, he sits down and draws in his notebook for 15 to 20 minutes. In the 20 years ALFRED has been doing this, there have been many drawings and notebooks. In Improvvisamente, whatever preoccupied or delighted him has been rendered for our delight. ALFRED said sometimes he will obsessively draw the same thing for several days in a row, sketches, trees, nudes, whatever caught his fancy!
ALFRED used these notebooks as a medium to draw without purpose, not intending his free drawing exercises to be shared, with no intent even to publish.
This little notebook was Alfred's artistic laboratory, a place to experiment with whatever technique or medium that came to mind... And it's fascinating!
About the artist:
Born in 1976, it seems that ALFRED entered into the world with a fixed idea: to tell stories in drawings. Completely self-taught, he began publishing with Éditions Delcourt in 1997, and in 2000 he launched the Octave children's series. In 2004, ALFRED adapted Roland Topor's novel Café panique, fulfilling a long-held dream of his.
ALFRED is also a musician, an actor, and a bit of an adventurer, moving to Venice for three years. No doubt that it was there that he found inspiration for Come Prima, which received the prestigious Fauve d'Or at the 2014 Angoulême International Comics Festival.
As if this is not already enough, ALFRED is also a published author, Maltempo, Senso, Castelmaure and Le Désespoir du singe, among others.
